Cello Lessons

Beginners - Introduction to Cello

Beginning students focus on fundamentals of cello playing and music in general. Lessons will focus on how to hold the instrument, how to make sound with your cello, and how to read music. From there, students begin developing their skills using Suzuki Cello School songs and exploring any music that particularly excites them. Lessons can range in time depending on the attention level of the student. Younger children often work better with half-hour to forty-five minute lessons. Children with greater attention-retention may have lessons for a full hour. However this level is not just for children! Adult beginners are more than welcome and can shape their lesson formats and frequency with how it fits best into their schedules.

Intermediate Students

Intermediate students begin shaping their abilities as cellists through more detail-oriented study. Students can expect continued work with Suzuki Cello School volumes of songs and the introduction of works by J.S. Bach for solo cello. Students at this level are also welcome to bring music the personally are interested in learning, particularly pieces they are playing outside of lessons in school or community orchestras. Lesson times at this level also vary depending on the age of the student. Typically students at this level are able to make use of forty-five minute or hour-long lessons.

Advanced Students

Advanced students continue fine-tuning their musicianship and technical proficiency on the cello. Students at a more advanced level will see a mixture of later Suzuki Cello School volumes and the introduction of concerto, chamber music, Popper etudes, and solo Bach repertoire as their main focus in lessons. Advanced students are expected to practice on a regular basis and come to lessons to be coached and receive personalized technical instruction. Topics such as tension-relief within the physicality of their playing and musical artistry are more of a focus as the fundamentals of cello playing become second-nature. This is an excellent level for middle and high school students looking to audition for local youth symphonies or university studies. Advanced students receive hour-long lessons but may receive hour and a half long instruction if requested.

Music Instruction is an expensive thing for families to invest in. Rates for cello teachers in the Boston area is particularly expensive. It is a moral and personal goal of mine that the families of my students and I are able to work together to find a plan that works for them. This can mean discounted rates when necessary or less frequent lessons to reduce the financial burden. Below are my standard rates for private cello instruction. Please note that sheet music materials will be provided to students at no additional cost. It is the responsibility of the student/family of the student to find a cello for their home practice and lessons. Iā€™d be happy to help in the search for an instrument that works best for you/your child.
